Chemist – Protective Coatings

Protective Coatings Chemist role is responsible for coatings formulation of new to business and Riteks paint products, performance paint evaluation, raw material selection and qualification, sales sample preparation, and technology transfer.

Essential duties and responsibilities (Required Competency):

Lab Responsibilities

  • With guidance from the VP of Protective Coatings, plan and develop new and robust paint formulations and manufacturing processes.
  • Development of SDS’s for new products.
  • When required due to regulation change or opportunity, reformulate existing paint products and associated manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and publish raw material and product specifications.
  • Provide technical support as needed to quality and operations.
  • Manage Quality Control process and procedures for both coatings and toll manufacturing
  • Serve as a technical advisor when needed.
  • In collaboration with purchasing, source, fabricate and approve new chemical packaging materials.
  • Continue to research and maintain a working knowledge of industry and product trends that support new paint product development.
  • Assure that the lab and handling of all chemicals is done consistent with company safety requirements.
  • Work with sales and marketing in concept development, prototype evaluation, label claims and final product selection.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with the ISO and Quality Assurance program.
  • Assist with product compliant, regulations and safety.

  • Minimum of a BS in Chemistry/Engineering.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in R&D/new product development for paint and coating formulations and color matching.

Additional Training Required:

  • Database training.
  • Product training completed by supplier over a specific period of time.

Additional Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of Enamels, Lacquers, Epoxy and Polyurethane based paints.
  • Understanding of Paint properties like Gloss, Dry Time, Flexibility, Adhesion, etc.
  • Working knowledge of R&D.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Data Analysis.
  • Experience with ISO Quality Management System.
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulations regarding hazardous chemicals.
  • A strong knowledge of reading and understanding TDS and GHS SDS.
