Cement only gets one chance to be in the right place at the right time. Set too early and you have a job in the pipe. Set too late and you are burning rig hours waiting on strength. Everything in between is controlled by a single class of additive: the cement retarder.
Oilfield cement retarders delay the hydration of the slurry so it stays pumpable long enough to reach total depth, turn the corner, and displace properly before it begins developing compressive strength. The deeper and hotter the well, the more that timing matters, because temperature accelerates hydration and shrinks the operational window.
The practical problem for most cementing engineers is not finding a retarder. It is finding one that behaves the same way twice. Inconsistent source material, unpredictable response to bottomhole circulating temperature, and additive incompatibility all show up as thickening time surprises, and thickening time surprises show up as nonproductive time.
Riteks builds its retarder line around that problem. The Riteks retarder portfolio splits into two families. The RCR line is organic, proven, and built for low-temperature service, the products crews have relied on for years where simplicity and dependability matter most. The SSR line is semi-synthetic, developed in the Riteks R&D laboratory to extend predictable retardation further up the temperature curve and reduce the number of products a service company has to carry.
RCR-150 is the industry-standard workhorse of the line. It is an organic retarder formulated to delay hydration in all grades of oilfield cement, and even some construction-grade cements, in environments below 220°F (105°C). It is the product crews reach for on primary and remedial jobs where extended pump time is critical and the well conditions do not call for anything exotic. Broad compatibility across cement grades and slurry systems makes it dependable on land and offshore alike.
RCR-200 is a lignosulfonate-based organic retarder that works across all API classes as well as pozzolanic cements, effective in wells with bottomhole circulating temperatures up to 220°F (105°C) and static temperature tolerance up to 260°F (126.7°C). It delivers reliable linear retardation, lengthens total thickening time, and still supports early compressive strength development. Where it separates itself is in high-gel and water-extended slurries, systems that give many retarders trouble. RCR-200 stays active in them, and increasing concentration improves the predictability of thickening time rather than degrading it.
SSR-21 is where the semi-synthetic line starts. It was engineered to act as a single, versatile retarder across a broad window from 100°F (38°C) to 220°F+ (105°C) rather than forcing a slurry designer to switch products every time conditions shift. The payoff is simplified slurry design, fewer SKUs on the bulk plant floor, and consistent, repeatable performance across varying cement systems, all without giving up cost efficiency.
SSR-225 carries the semi-synthetic approach into low-to-mid temperature service, with dosage rates tailored for 175°F (80°C) to 275°F+ (135°C). It is a non-dispersing formula that produces predictable, repeatable thickening times without requiring a retarder intensifier, which is what Riteks customers mean when they call it an all-in-one-bag solution. Fewer components in the blend means fewer variables to troubleshoot when a job does not go to plan, and compressive strength still develops the way the design intends.
SSR-250 is the mid-temperature step in the ladder, formulated for the API and ASTM cements common to mid-temperature basins and dosed for 200°F (93°C) to 300°F+ (150°C). It is a proprietary non-dispersing chemistry with manageable dosage rates and dependable thickening time control, built for the conditions where organic retarders start to get unpredictable and where the industry has historically had thin options. Primary or remedial, it is designed to behave the same way every time.
SSR-275 takes the same non-dispersing, intensifier-free philosophy into the hottest wells in the line, covering 225°F (107°C) to 350°F+ (177°C). It is built for demanding mid-to-high temperature primary and remedial cementing where thickening time control is unforgiving and slurry designs are already carrying a long list of additives. Operational flexibility and predictable dosage response are the point: fewer surprises on the consistometer, fewer surprises on location.

RCR-150 and RCR-200 cover proven organic performance at the cool end, with RCR-200 handling the high-gel and water-extended slurries that give other products trouble. SSR-21 consolidates the low-to-mid range into a single dependable choice. SSR-225, SSR-250, and SSR-275 walk that dependability progressively up the temperature curve, and the deliberate overlap between them means there is no gap where a slurry designer is stuck choosing between a product that quits early and one that over-retards.
